Bzangy Groink Playlist 18/8/10

Allo Darlin'

Umm… how can I say this? I deleted the playlist before saving it when I was DJing at HDIF this weekend… :-(

Ah well, I’m sure the world can miss one of my playlists in a fortnight without crumbling. What I can tell you is this: the top new song I played tonight was ‘Silver Dollars’ by allo darlin.’ Just a beautiful pop song from one of my fave current songwriters. It’s taken from the debut album and I recommend you go and buy it now. Don’t even listen, just buy it!

As for the rest… I’ve no idea! :-)

Bzangy Groink Playlist 21/7/10

Broken Links

Woohoo, another busy night with *loads* of requests which I managed to honour as well as cramming in as much new stuff as possible! The best new song tonight was ‘What Are You Waiting For?’ by Broken Links. When I first downloaded and clicked play on Broken Links, I had no idea what would leap out. And it was one of those moments that keeps me DJing, keeps me looking for new music as what spilled out of my speakers was a delicious mix of goth, indie and synthy weirdness. Tying it all together is an immense melodic catchiness. Really, I think Broken Links will be huge sometime soon, do yourself a favour and get on them now so you can be smug then.

rlyl

The best old track was also a lovely collision of goth and pop: Red Lorry Yellow Lorry’s ‘Walking On Your Hands.’ I fucking love this song so much, it’s one of those tunes that makes you want to dance and punch stuff and hit your head against walls, all in the purest sense of physical joy. What a guitar riff, what a bassline! And who doesn’t love goth drum machineness. Lovely.

Huoratron

No one top new track tonight because instead there were three tracks from the fantastic new album by Huoratron. Last year, Vitalic made it to the topspot in my best albums list. I have a feeling that Huoratron’s mix of stupid, stupid noises, slamming, horrible beats and the sound of seagulls being shredded is going to do the same this year. It’s gonna be in the top five at least. Check it out if you’ve ever liked any electronic music of any form whatsoever.

A Tribe Called Quest

It was also a very busy night so I got loads of requests. Hence the chunks of old hip hop and ska in the playlist. So, this week’s top old tune was the simply sumptuous ‘We Can Get Down’ by A Tribe Called Quest. I have listened to this song a ridiculous amount of times and yet, every time I hear it, I’m amazed at the melding of rhymes and beats. It’s perfect. Flawless. Perfection.

Screaming Maldini

Tonight’s top new tune was ‘Secret Sounds’ by Sheffield beat combo Screaming Maldini. You couldn’t get get a more summery, singalong indiepop song than this. Even without the kookaburra references. Check ‘em out if you’ve ever sung along to Tilly And The Wall, Los Camps or, er, anything.

Biggie

The best old track was ‘Unbelievable’ by the much missed Notorious B.I.G. And I’m not being in the slightest ironic in saying that. Mr. Wallace provided the soundtrack for some of the most important moments at a certain time in my life. Irreplaceable.

Bzangy Groink Playlist 24/3/10

Another busy Bzangy and hence loads more requests. This time for Tarkan, Saves The Day (yaaay!), Cap’n Jazz and Andrew Gold (double yaay!). Now, that’s what I call discerning music taste!

Anarbor

The best new tune tonight is one that I’ve had in the car on repeat for the last couple of weeks. In ‘Drugstore Diet’, Anarbor have given me my poppunk anthem for this summer. It ticks all the boxes for me: it’s hugely catchy and singalong, the lyrics are lovely and thoughtful and it makes me want to dance. God, if this came on when I was out, I think I’d go mental! Their debut album is released on the 20th April and I reckon if you’ve ever sung along to any Fallout Boy, CIWWAF, Saves The Day, Promise Ring or TBS, you’ll most probably sing along to this album too. POP!

Trembling Blue Stars

Tonight’s best old track was a different TBS; Trembling Blue Stars‘ ‘Abba On The Jukebox.’ I was lucky enough to meet some Bobby and Beth TBS recently at London Popfest and wanted to hug them both for hours. Fortunately for them, I resisted. The mood I felt in at the end of Bzangy was hopeful yet melancholic, nostalgic without being maudlin. This song fits that mood perfectly. Can I suggest that you make a little room in your life for TBS’ wonder?

Bzangy Groink Playlist 10/3/10

Woo – loads of requests tonight: Russian Circles, MSTRKRFT, Refused, Venetian Snares. But I still managed to cram in craploads of brand-new music as well.

Swanton Bombs

The best from the new was Swanton Bombs‘ ‘Who’s Asking.’ I love the rawness of this track, I love the middle bit guitar riffery. There’s a lot to be said for eschewing the wanky solo in favour of the cranking rhythm, The Kinks knew that and so do Swanton Bombs, even though they sound fuck-all like The Kinks.

Venetian Snares

The best old track has to be Venetian Snares‘ ‘Einstein-Rosen Bridge.’ I’m sure I’ve had it as a best old track before, it’s so utterly awesome. And, as old as it is, it still makes people look up and do good WTF?? faces. Pure loveliness!

And, tonight, I broke all my normal Bzangy rules by playing not one but three tracks currently on Radio One. The first was Wiley because I love it and, hey, it’s nice to have (a bit) of my song back in the charts! :-)
The other two were the then (and still, as I type this!) number one and two UK singles: Tinie Tempah and Rihanna. Why did I play them? Well, because they’re two of my favourite pop singles in ages. I’m obsessed with them and have been playing them in my car pretty much non-stop. Mmmm… bassssss. And what are rules unless you break ‘em every now and then, eh?
