American forces in Afghanistan say more than a dozen insurgents have been killed in a joint US-Afghan operation in the southern province of Uruzgan.
The forces say they were returning fire after coming under ambush.

I find blackbirds extraordinarily pretty. It’s partly the smart, black plumage (beautiful plumage!) and the clever orange accessorising but it’s also the way they skip about so adroitly. Like starlings, I think they’re unfairly ignored.
