First Lensbaby Test Shots!

Mooooo!

This morning my Lensbaby arrived from America. It was sunny when I did the first shots at home so I thought I’d pop into town and give it a tryout. Of course, as soon as I got in, typically grey Derby weather arrived.

After a day of shooting with it, I’m already in love with it. The only downside so far was that I was whacked with a twenty-three quid import charge. I’d looked around the web but couldn’t find an English supplier so I bought it direct from the manufacturer. Fifty quid for such an amazing lens is a bargain but once you add the courier and the import duty, it almost doubled the cost (though I could have chosen far cheaper delivery options and Lensbabies can’t be held responsible for our taxes).

I’ve seen many examples of the gloriously blurry, impressionistic images it produces on the net but what I wasn’t prepared for was how sharp and contrasty it could also be. Being able to move the sweet spot around was great fun, as was the totally manual focussing:

Sadler Gate

I had so much fun today with this little lens. I know some people may wonder what the attraction is of a basically blurry lens, why not just create the same effect in Photoshop but they’re missing the point. When you use a Lensbaby, it makes you take photographs differently. No more auto-aperture, no more auto-focus! It forces different choices which means you take different pics. And I don’t think I could ever reproduce the beauty of true extreme chromatic aberration that Lensbaby produces.

All the shots in the following gallery were taken at f5.6 mainly cos I hadn’t managed to prise the rubber grommet out of the lens to change the aperture ring!

The Decemberists

I feel a wee bit previous about this week’s top new tune since it isn’t released until March 22nd. But fuckit, I can’t avoid it any longer! The tune is ‘Sixteen Military Wives’ by the wonderful Decemberists. It’s from their new album, ‘Picaresque,’ which is coming out on Kill Rock Stars. The album is gorgeous, being entirely like a four-course-meal in the famine that is the current indie pop scene. Yes, it has real songs on it, not vague restructurings of Gang Of Four b-sides. Do you remember songs? I’m hoping the sheer poppiness of this album brings The Decemberists all the fame / money / left-handed potrzebies they desire. I also hope that they one day do a cover version of Split Enz’ ‘Six Months In A Leaky Boat,’ a rollicking, nautical tune which they were born to do. But that’s another matter. Put your order in for the album now unless you hate all pop music ever.

The best old tune was ‘Big Decision’ by That Petrol Emotion. Formed out of the ashes of The Undertones, TPE were a classic ’80′s indie band. Not “indie” in the way it’s mis-represented by the coke-addled hacks at Q and Mojo but in the true sense: TPE were political, experimental and confrontational. Today’s corporate chart schmindie is a poor relation, it merely follows whatever template sells. One week angular guitars, the next bleeping synths, the week after, angsty mockney dirges. TPE had brains, soul and better pop songs than today’s gutless, whining whores.

Prince Nazi

Harry The Fucking Posh TWAT
The heir to the throne, another posh fucking moron

This is the best comment about the whole stormtrooper-in-a-teacup:

The Trouble With Harry

Having been regularly beaten up from around the age of eight by lads sporting swastikas, I didn’t really see the funny side myself. Fascism killed tens of millions and if you’ve had the privilege of being sent to Eton (at the British taxpayers’ expense), you should know that. What kind of fucking idiot goes to a party in 2005 themed ‘natives and colonials’ anyway?

But of course, I don’t think he’s a Nazi. He’s just another right-wing, idiot aristo. Why is anyone surprised at that? Look at his grandad and his racist spewings. Harry’s just another chip off the same old diseased block. Remember how fond Edward and Mrs. Simpson were of Herr Hitler? The British monarchy has more than just blood ties to Germany.

The ultimate irony is that swastika is taken from the Sanskrit word ‘svastika.’ It’s a Hindu religious symbol. So the bootboys who used to beat the crap out of me were actually embracing my culture. Even as they were demanding my family’s death/repatriation, they were active multiculturalists.

US Anti Human Rights

US Justice

Violations of human rights by the US are undermining international law and eroding its role on the world stage, a leading campaign group says.

Human Rights Watch says the US can no longer claim to defend human rights abroad if it practises abuses itself.

The group, the largest US-based rights organisation, says the actions of the US in such detention centres have undermined Washington’s credibility as a proponent of human rights and a leader of the war against terror.

“Its embrace of coercive interrogation [is] part of a broader betrayal of human rights principles in the name of combating terrorism,” HRW says.

A simple point, well made.

US Officially Admits : There Are NO WMDs

Intelligence officials have confirmed the US has stopped searching for weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

They say the chief US investigator, Charles Duelfer, is not planning to return to the country.

Mr Duelfer reported last year that Iraq had no stockpiles of chemical or biological weapons at the time of the US-led invasion nearly two years ago.
(Source: BBC News)

I’ll just put this in bold in big letters so even Tory/Republican fuckwits can follow the facts:

THERE ARE NO WMDS IN IRAQ. THERE WERE NO WMDS TWO YEARS AGO. THE US AND UK INVADED A NON-AGGRESSOR COUNTRY ILLEGALLY AND KILLED 100,000 CIVILIANS FOR NO PURPOSE BUT OIL AND POWER.

Chief U.S. weapons hunter Charles Duelfer is to deliver his final report on the search next month. “It’s not going to fundamentally alter the findings of his earlier report,” McClellan said, referring to preliminary findings from last September. Duelfer reported then that Saddam Hussein not only had no weapons of mass destruction and had not made any since 1991, but that he had no capability of making any either.
(Source: ABC News)

Bush lied. Blair lied. Both deceived the public, manipulated data and manufactured phony evidence to support their grand Middle-Eastern adventure.

All the cunts who supported the invasion of Iraq will wash away these facts as easily as they wash away the blood of the Iraqi dead. Remember Geoff Hoon claiming that Iraqi mothers would thank the UK for killing their children? Remember the arrogance of the US military stating baldly that it didn’t care about Iraqi casualties? Remember how the US and UK government supported Hussein when he gassed the Kurds, when he was still one of their official “friends?” Then, when it suited them, they cried crocodile tears over the Kurds. They’re not shedding any tears for the hundred thousand Iraqi dead that they killed.

Those Iraqis don’t count. They’ve been slaughtered by us so it’s okay. We’re good murderers, Hussein was a bad murderer.

Maybe some people were genuinely fooled by Bush and Blair. Maybe, in good conscience, they thought that Iraq posed a real threat to Britain or had stockpiles of WMDs. That’s understandable. Sad, but not that surprising.

But if you still support the illegal invasion and occupation of Iraq now

You won’t believe the bloodthirsty shit that’s out there on the net. Warmongers crowing at the slaughter of women and children in Fallujah, demanding that Iraq be nuked, rejoicing that so many ‘towelheads’ are being killed by their brave soldier boys. These people, these armchair generals, are basically Nazi scum.

I want to see all British forces out of Iraq. And if there’s any justice in the world, I want to see Tony Blair tried for his warcrimes. I don’t want to be severe.

Let’s just let him serve one year in prison for every Iraqi life he’s taken.

JUICE

Tonight’s top new track was ‘All U Got’ by JUICE. The Chicago rapper shows he’s a master of both flow and imagery on this track, his poetry flips from brutal to beautiful quite unpredictably. You can easily hear the steel that helped him best both Common and Eminem in freestyle battles. ‘All U Got’ is taken from JUICE’s new album ‘All Bets Off’ which is released today, January 11th (yes, I’m writing up my playlist far too late as usual). Check out the album, there are loads more head-nodding tracks on there.

Artie Shaw

Tonight’s best old track was Artie Shaw’s ‘Oh! Lady Be Good.’ I played this as a tribute to Artie who passed away recently. It’s a blistering, rampaging track, the beat is so infectious you can’t sit still. And over it, Artie’s clarinet soars effortlessly.

Whoops! You’re Dead!

More liberated Iraqis

Fourteen Iraqis were reported killed and five injured early yesterday morning after an American war plane obliterated a family house in the north of the country. The military said it was a mistake.

Last year, US forces mounted frequent air strikes on houses in the western Iraqi city of Fallujah ahead of a major ground offensive, claiming the houses were being used by insurgents.

In May, US marines outraged ordinary Iraqis when they attacked an isolated villa in western Iraq, claiming it was an insurgent base and killing 40. Survivors said they were all civilians.
(Source: Common Dreams)

Which has killed more Iraqis: US military evil or US military incompetence?

Either way, these fourteen innocent civilians will now join the 100,000+ other Iraqis killed by the foreign invaders.

It seems for the US government, liberation = death.

Is Bush The Antichrist?

BushBeast

“Bush is one of the key figures leading the church away from Jesus,” says Christian author Don Miller, who wrote the nonbluenose Christian best seller Blue Like Jazz. …

[Miller] couldn’t stomach it when, for instance, Texas Gov. Bush not only allowed the execution of his fellow born-again Christian, the penitent ax murderer Karla Faye Tucker, but made vicious fun of her (“Please don’t kill me!” Bush said, mocking her prayerful plea for God’s mercy).

Miller classifies Bush Christians as modern Pharisees—the allegedly proud, rigid, legalistic hypocrites John the Baptist called “a generation of vipers.” “The worst condemnation that Jesus has for anybody, I mean the worst, is for Pharisees,” says Miller. “If you asked Jerry Falwell who the Pharisees are in our society, they can’t point anybody out.” There are no mirrors in Bush’s church.
(Source: Seattle Weekly News)

I got sent a link to the above article by my friend Paul. It’s a fascinating article, well worth a read if you’re at all religious or even a wheezing old dialectical materialist like me.

It cheered me up hugely. I think I’ve swallowed a lot of the Bushite propaganda so it’s good to see there’s a whole swathe of American Christians out there who are just as outraged at Bush and the neocons as the rest of us are. It must be bizarre to be a lifelong Christian and then see your faith stolen from you and distorted by someone who laughs while ordering the murder of another human being.

There’s Always Money For War

The US government has so far pledged $350m to the victims of the tsunami, and the UK government £50m ($96m). The US has spent $148 billion on the Iraq war and the UK £6bn ($11.5bn). The war has been running for 656 days. This means that the money pledged for the tsunami disaster by the United States is the equivalent of one and a half day’s spending in Iraq. The money the UK has given equates to five and a half days of our involvement in the war.
(Source: The Guardian)

Think about the above figures the next time you see Butcher Blair on TV, doing his oily serious face and talking about helping the tsunami victims.

There’s always money for war, always money to drop thousands of bombs on Iraqi civilians. Always money for missiles, rockets, state-of-the-art military computer tech.

But when we need money for education, for hospitals, for building homes for the homeless, all the basic infrastructure every civilised country should have, the money isn’t there. We must listen to the “free” market, we must be realistic about taxation, we musn’t reward undeserving scum by providing them with healthcare/homes/jobs.

Why is it that the only public spending program Tories / Republicans approve of unreservedly is the killing of other humans?

Let’s take the US government figures:

$148 billion for killing people
$350 million for helping people

Bit of a disparity there, hmmm? It shows the US government’s priorities. Note that I say government. What the average American wants may have nothing in common with what his/her government actually does.

I’ve already heard grumbling about the aid being given to tsunami victims, all from Tory twats of course. It’s the same old racist shite: why should we be giving our money to those foreigners? Funny how the people complaining are the same flag-waving cretins only too happy to see their tax money being spent on bombing foreigners.

Here’s an idea: let’s privatise WAR!

All those who want to wage war on Iraq can simply buy the planes, rockets, bombs directly from the military corporations. Then they can employ mercenaries to fight and die with their own money too. No government should use public funds to wage war, it should all come from private investors. So should any money for research and development programs – why should they get billions from public funds? Isn’t that the COMMIE way to run the military?

After all, isn’t the “free” market the best way to run the world? Don’t all the bourgeois economists and politicians agree that it’s the most “efficient” economic system? If it’s so great, why don’t we apply it to waging war?

Let’s make war properly subject to the laws of supply and demand. The corporations want to sell us war, let’s see if anyone’s buying at those prices.

Look at those figures above again. That’s your money being spent on war, that’s money directly from your family’s pocket. Imagine if our governments’ priorities were based around nurture rather than murder. Imagine if helping the tsunami victims was truly as high a priority as war…

How different would the world be?

Adam Green

Tonight’s top new song was Adam Green’s ‘Crackhouse Blues.’ It’s from his new album ‘Gemstones’ which is due to be released on January 24th by Rough Trade. ‘Crackhouse Blues’ is an immensely catchy pop song, veering from the childlike happiness of prime Jonathan Richman to more Steve Malkmussy surreal territory. The album is just as good and I can confidently say, even this early, it’s going to be one of this year’s top albums. You’ll love it too, unless you hate pop songs.

The best old tune was Comateen’s ‘Get Off My Case.’ I thought it’d sound good in the Bless and I wasn’t wrong: it’s an ecstatic slab of funky fun, sounding so fresh and energetic compared to all the current bands trying to rip this style off.
